Frequently asked questions

Yes — Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London, and RIBA North in Liverpool, are free to enter for everyone. You do not need to book a free ticket or timed slot to enter — you can drop in at any time during opening hours.

You will need to book a ticket for temporary exhibitions. Tate Members do not need to book. To book a ticket for an exhibition, visit our What’s On page and select the exhibition you would like to see. You will then be able to book a ticket.

Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum both require separate tickets to enter. Tate Members and Local Pass holders do not need tickets to enter these sites.

Tate Britain is open from Monday to Sunday 10.00–18.00.

Tate Modern is open Monday–Thursday and Sunday 10.00–18.00. On Fridays and Saturdays, Tate Modern is open until 21.00.

RIBA North is open Monday to Sunday 10.00–17.50.

Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Gallery are open Monday to Sunday 10.00–17.20. From November 2025 the galleries will be open Tuesday to Sunday 10.00–16.20.

All Tate galleries are open year-round, except 24–26 December for the festive period.

Tickets for temporary exhibitions can be purchased online via our secure website and in the galleries during opening hours (please note ticket desks close 45 minutes before the gallery closes).

Tickets can be booked online on the day of your visit, if there is availability.

To book an exhibition ticket online, visit our What's On page, select the exhibition you would like to see, and follow the instructions to book.

If you book online, you will receive PDF e-tickets by email as well as a booking confirmation email. Your PDF e-tickets can be added to an e-wallet, left as a PDF email attachment, or printed. You will be required to show the PDF e-ticket at the exhibition/event entrance on a phone or tablet, or a printed version, to be scanned.

If you have booked Tate Collective tickets (for 16-25 year olds), you will be required to show proof of age ID when tickets are scanned upon admission.

All adult and concession tickets have two prices. These are:

• A price which includes an additional donation of at least 10% (of original price):
  This is a Gift Aid price. Not only does the additional donation help Tate as a charity, it allows Tate to claim Gift Aid if you are also a UK taxpayer. If you complete a Gift Aid declaration as part of your purchase, Tate can treat the whole value of the ticket as a donation and claim 25p in every £1 in tax, providing more access to more art.

Joining Tate

Tate Members and Tate Patrons have free entry to all exhibitions.

Tate Membership gives the best value if you want to visit more than one exhibition. Prices start from £78 a year or £7.50 a month.

Tate Collective is an online free-to-join scheme for 16-25 year olds, giving access to £5 tickets for exhibitions and much more. Learn more and join Tate Collective here.

• Patrons, Acquisition Committee Members and International Council Members
• Corporate Partners and Corporate Members
• Artist or Trustee cardholders
• Locals Pass Holders (St Ives only)

Concessions

• Student with valid ID
• Disabled (with one complimentary companion ticket if required). When booking an exhibition visit online, please select one disabled admission ticket plus a complimentary companion ticket. If you are booking for an event, please contact us to add a complimentary companion ticket to your booking.

Other discounts or offers

• Universal or Pension Credit (plus Income Support, Personal Independence Payments and Job Seekers Allowance recipients) – £5 for each exhibition
• Family child 12–18 years old – £5 for each exhibition at Tate Britain and Tate Modern.
• Family children under 12 are free at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Family children under 18 are free at Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. Children must be accompanied by an adult (maximum of four per adult). Please note if visiting as part of a group of 10 or more, everyone needs a ticket including all under 12 year olds. There is a charge for school groups of any age.
• UK Teacher with valid ID – concession rate
• National Art Pass/Art Fund members currently receive a 50% discount on adult or concession prices
• Other selected Arts organisations may be eligible for a concession rate – please contact us
• ICOM, Museums Association and AICA members and staff from organisations as part of our reciprocal entry agreements can book free tickets online for our exhibitions. On the ticket selection page open up the 'View more ticket options including Art Pass' menu and choose the relevant ticket type from the list. Tickets are for the for the card holder or staff member only and a valid card or staff ID should be presented with the ticket on entry. Tickets are subjective to availability and cannot be booked for the first and last two weeks of an exhibition.

School & adult groups

• Discounted prices are available for groups of 10 or more people if booked at least two weeks in advance. Please note there is limited availability.

Special Offers

Discounts or 2-for-1 offers are sometimes offered by partner organisations on exhibition and event tickets. These offers are available on standard full price tickets only and cannot be used in conjunction with any other discounts, promotions or as part of group bookings.

Tate Members do not need to book exhibition tickets.

Members may need to book tickets for events such as talks and workshops. Please read the ticketing information on the relevant event page.

Yes – all exhibition tickets are timed with 15-minute time slots to enter. With busy exhibitions, Tate will enforce the timed entry on the tickets.

You will not be able to enter before the time on your tickets. Once inside an exhibition, you are welcome to stay as long as you need (within gallery hours). Once you leave the exhibition, re-admission is not permitted. Last entry for all exhibitions is normally one hour before the gallery closes.

If you are visiting with a carer or helper, a complimentary companion ticket is available to you. When booking an exhibition visit online, please select one disabled admission ticket plus a complimentary companion ticket. When booking by phone, please state that you require a companion ticket. If you are booking for an event, please contact us to add a complimentary companion ticket to your booking.

Wheelchairs and accessible parking spaces are available to book. Tate Britain and Tate Modern also have mobility scooters and walkers. Please contact us by telephone or email to book, giving at least 24 hours notice if possible. For Tate St Ives please email stivesticketing@tate.org.uk. Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives also have Changing Places facilities.

We do not offer refunds. However, we can exchange some exhibition tickets for a different date or time, subject to availability and provided you return the unwanted ticket before their valid date and time slot. We charge a £1 exchange fee per ticket. We cannot exchange tickets which are valid for past dates or time slots.

My e-tickets haven’t arrived!

If you booked online and haven’t received the email containing your PDF e-tickets, please check your junk mail folder. If you cannot find the email, log in to your account and go to the MY TICKETS section, where you should see your recent online bookings with links to download the PDF e-tickets.

You can also request e-tickets to be resent via this link. You will need to enter the email address you used to book with.

I have mislaid my tickets or they have not arrived in the post!

Please visit the Ticket Collection point on the day of your visit, bringing the booking reference number. We will print replacement tickets for you.

I’m having trouble logging in online!

When purchasing tickets, please go to the Login/Register page and follow the on-screen instructions. If you are still having problems, please contact us.

How can I contact staff to get further help?

Membership and Ticket Services is a team of Tate staff who work in the galleries and in our contact centre based in London.

Staff can help at gallery desks during gallery hours. Please note ticket desks close 45 minutes, and Members Room desks close 30 minutes before the galleries do.
